For the third year in a row, the Association of Ridgecrest Arabian
Breeders (ARAB) congratulates Angelina Marie Taylor, the winner of the 2006
W. A. “Wink” Chappell Memorial Trophy. Angelina, riding her Arabian
gelding Gymmine Cricket, rode to victory in gymkhana competition against all
breeds and all ages.
In telling the tale of how
she acquired this wonderful gelding, Angelina gave us the story at the 2004
presentation ceremony. "Gymmine Cricket was born in 1991 at Faith Arabians ranch in
Onyx, CA. He turned out to be a bit too much for his 10-year-old owner. It
was at 3 years old that he was bought by a 13-year-old girl who just thought
it would be cool to own a white horse. She named him Gymkhana after the
sport she wanted to train him for. She worked with him for 4 long years,
starting at a walk, then trot, then lope. Gymkhana was starting to do well
when she sadly out grew him. Her parents divorced, she moved and Gymkhana
sat for 3 years. Then I came into the picture. When I heard a gymkhana
horse was for sale I looked into it. When I heard it was an Arabian I said
'no way!' After my mom talked me into it, I went to Gymkhana's owner's house
to test ride him. Love at first sight" And the rest
is history.

Bill "Wink"
Chappell Memorial Award
The W. A. "Wink" Chappell high-point award was
established by ARAB in 1984 to honor the working horse. This award was the "brain child" of ARAB
charter member Neil LaFortune who made the
motion to establish it as a way to recognize and honor the contributions
made to all equine enthusiasts by Bill "Wink" Chappell. See the above
information on Wink for history of this award. Bill "Wink"
Chappell, an honorary member of ARAB, established the first professional horse-training
stables in the Indian Wells Valley in 1965. This training stable was conducted as a
partnership with Lorry Wagner and based at the Sierra Dawn Arabians ranch. A few
months later, Floyd and Velma Pickrell established their Rancho Bajada Riding Stables
where Wink gave evening riding lessons to an average of 200 students each week until he
retired. From 1965 until his retirement in 1975, Wink trained many of the Valley's
finest horses and riders, using the "Early California" (Vaquero) methods of
training and riding. Wink continued to ride until the age of 82. As
Lorry started the youngsters of both the training stables and Sierra Dawn
Arabians, Wink would ride the Sierra Dawn youngsters and put the finishing polish
on "his half" of them.
